One of the essential qualities of the clinician is interest in humanity, as the secret for patient care is in caring for the patient. To be a doctor, then, means much more than to dispense pills or repair torn flesh and shattered minds. To be a doctor is to be an intermediary between man and GOD.
To him, Being a good doctor means being incredibly compulsive, but he was calm and collected as I rambled on with the questions and answered each with great care and I thought to myself , ‘‘what a lovely quality for a doctor to posses’’.
Below are the excerpts from the interview with Vedushan Kanagarajah …
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO PURSUE MEDICINE?
I stared down at the sheet I held. It had my name and the grades followed. Not what I had hoped for but something I thought I could exploit. My passion for a career was split and I was led into a dilemma. Do I try to pursue law or step into the medical field? I always knew medicine would be a challenge, a challenge I wanted to conquer. Thus started my journey towards choosing a competent university and acquiring admission.
WHAT LED YOU TO CHOOSE TO STUDY OVERSEAS?
My search for a university was widespread. Ranging from Latvia and Belarus to Australia. The competitive nature of the medical field and the difficulty to attain admission to a medical school is common knowledge. Keeping this in mind I had to traverse carefully and cleverly. It was then that Mr.P.Saravanan who serves as a Director/CFO at ANC suggested Pathe Study Medicine as an option to prospect a good university to pursue my tertiary education. I wanted to practice medicine in Sri Lanka but was also aware of the vibe in Sri Lanka with regards to Private Medical Colleges. Having completed my London A/Levels, I understood that continuing my education in a foreign nation would be the more viable alternative.
HOW WERE YOU/ OR WHO REFFERED YOU TO PATHE?
Mr Saravanan was the initial contact point for PATHE and it is he who referred me to my meeting with Mr.Naushad and Ms.Usha from PATHE. Both were quite convincing and informative at the same time. I immediately felt as ease with them and I believe that positive energy is why I opted to proceed with PATHE.
WHAT FACTORS DID YOU TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION WHEN YOU CHOSE MMMC?
Dr.UllasKammath – Dean, MMMC –India
My choices had been narrowed to RSU,Latvia or MMMC,Malaysia. MMMC is one of the best private universities in India, and an affiliation of MELEKA MANIPAL MEDICAL COLLEGE in Malaysia. It is the recipient of the prestigious Brand Laureate Award for Corporate Branding in Education (medicine) and is carries a 6 star rating in the famed MyQuest Health and Welfare cluster (2011).
The programme offers the best of two worlds- a solid foundation in basic science in the campus in India, and comprehensive clinical training in Malaysia. It prepares students to be in par with the global competition and I am specifically looking forward to the USMLE and MRCP training programmes that are targeted to prepare students to take up careers in USA and UK.
MMMC also meets the requirements of the SLMC and is recognised globally by the International Medical Education Directory (IMED) and the WHO list of recognised medical schools. As a student at MMMC I am now a part of an esteemed education system with a worldwide alumni. Even though there existed a minor issue with regard to the of lack of houseman ship provision by the university ( Malaysian Government Regulation) it is a wonderful opportunity which would expose me to the medical system of two countries India and Malaysia.
Furthermore, Manipal not only delivers an enriching learning experience but also has various recreational facilities such as swimming pool, squash court, tennis court, basketball court, futsal court and fitness centre to promote and encourage a healthy lifestyle in the campus community and that to me was a selling point as I am an advocate for same.
WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANT FACTOR THAT MADE PATHE A PLEASANT EXPERIENCE?
Naushad provided his complete support during the whole course of my admission and also accompanied all the students to the University. His amazing personality bought together 9 very nervous teenagers and I believe we have made a friend for life.
Mr. Naushad Meedin – Assistant Manager (Malaysian Medical Universities), Student – VedushanKanagarajah
WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE TO SOMEONE CONSIDERING OVERSEAS EDUCATION?
My advice to any future young oversea prospector would be to weigh your options with care and select the university which caters the maximum to your aspiration and interests. What is vital is to find a partner as competent as PATHE to make the journey pleasant.
Completing my MBBS is only a stepping stone. My ambition is to pursue my masters (MD). That is as far as I have thought through in my head and I hope that all the rest will fall into place with the grace of god and the blessings of my parents.
MRS KANAGARAJAH- MOTHER OF VEDUSHAN KANAGARAJAH, 1ST YEAR STUDENT AT MMMC
As a parent it was very reassuring to be directed to PATHE by someone very dear to our family. Mr Saravanan is not only family but is a mentor to my son Vedushan. We approached PATHE with great confidence that they will be direct Vedushan to the most ideal university placement and I must say that we were not disappointed, I am thankful to Mr Saravanan for having guided us through the entire decision making process and I must commend the service we received from the counselling team at PATHE.
PATHE did not stop at University admission advice and assistance in visas .They went into great detail in ensuring that Vedushan is comfortable by arranging for Student accommodation in university hostels and apartments and organizing the Student medical Insurance. Which I believe is very essential given the circumstances.
I really appreciate that there is a Student monitoring program in place to provide immediate progress reports to parents / guardians and it is a great relief to us as parents to know there is somebody looking out for our children apart from us.
MR KANAGARAJAH- FATHER OF VEDUSHAN KANAGARAJAH, 1ST YEAR STUDENT AT MMMC
Manipal University has provided a great platform for all students to explore themselves – personally and professionally. It has not been long since he has been there and my son has many great things to say about it.
MMMC MBBS program is fully recognized by the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC). In addition to this MMMC graduates can practice medicine in some of the best destinations such as USA, Canada, Australia, UK, Middle-east and Europe. As a parent I am looking forward to when my son will reap the benefits of all the late nights and strenuous study sessions ahead of him.
PATHE is a part of Sri Lanka’s largest and most successful education group with presence of Montessori, High school, University (undergraduate and post graduate), and professional training programmes and I am confident that such a fully-fledged operation cannot function for over a decade if the people did not have confidence in them. I wish them all the best.
Thank you PATHE for your direction in choosing the best suited institute for Vedushan!
